Four Tar Heels Record Hat Tricks As Carolina Dominates Virginia Tech, 19-3

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team got hat tricks from four different players, jumping out to a big early lead and holding on to cruise past Virginia Tech 19-3 on a hot Friday afternoon at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
Corey Donohoe had three goals and a career-high four assists to lead Carolina. Becky Lynch and Kristen Taylor both had three goals and two assists for UNC, while Laura Zimmerman had the fourth hat trick of the game. Emily Garrity had two goals and one assist, Jenn Russell and Kara Cannizzarro had two goals each and Megan Bosica scored once. Sarah Kuonen also added an assist for Carolina.
With the win, Carolina improves to 9-1 this season, 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech falls to 4-8, 0-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels improve to 15-0 all-time against the Hokies.
The Tar Heels led 10-0 after 20 minutes of action, led 12-1 at halftime and scored the first seven goals of the second half for a commanding, 19-1 advantage before the Hokies scored the last two goals of the game in the closing minutes.
Carolina jumped on top early with three goals in the first five minutes and six in the first 10:27. The Tar Heels led 10-0 with 9:32 left in the first period. Six different Carolina players scored during the opening 10-0 run.
UNC didn't allow a Hokie goal until Martin scored off a pass from Emala at the 7:15 mark. Lynch then scored the last two goals of the half for a 12-1 UNC lead at the break.
The Tar Heels ripped off a 7-0 run to start the second half and boost their lead to 19-1.
Logan Ripley started in goal for Carolina and played the first half, allowing one goal and recording four saves. Britt Giacco came in to start the second half and played 12:29 minutes, tallying a save without allowing a goal. Freshman Lauren Maksym came in to play the final 17:31, saving three shots and allowing two goals.
Alex Gale started in the cage for the Hokies and went the distance, allowing all 19 UNC goals and making six saves. Brooke Martin scored twice for Virginia Tech and Jessica Nonn scored once.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday at Old Dominion at 1 p.m.
