Tar Heels Shutout Cougars 10-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Greg Holt, Zach Bernard and Jimmy Messer combined to throw a five hit shutout to lead No. 21 North Carolina over College of Charleston 10-0 Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Eight different Tar Heels registered a hit to earn Carolina's season-high eighth straight victory and improve the Tar Heels to 32-17 on the year.
The Cougars Matt Pegler suffers his first loss of the season as College of Charleston falls to 36-14 overall. Nine walks and two errors in the loss plagued the Cougars.
Holt (3-2) allowed just two hits over a career-best six frames while registering three strikeouts. Bernard allowed just three hits over two scoreless innings and Messer worked a perfect ninth to seal the Carolina staff's third shutout this season.
Dillon Hazlett and Ryan Graepel each posted two hits and two RBI to lead Carolina offensively. Jesse Wierzbicki added a two-run home run, his team-leading eighth of the season, and eighth home run for the Tar Heels in their last five games.
Levi Michael notched a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to a career-best and team season-high 16 games. Mike Cavasinni and Tommy Coyle also added two hits apiece, along with two RBI from Brian Goodwin.
The Tar Heels matched a season-high scoring nine runs, seven with two outs, in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back doubles off the bats of Hazlett and Graepel manufactured two Carolina runs.
Wierzbicki followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence for two more runs. After a series of walks Goodwin and Graepel each followed with RBI singles to allow four more Tar Heels to cross the plate. Carolina mashed seven hits in the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
A two-out double off the bat of Bunting scored Cavasinni in the bottom of the sixth to extend Carolina's lead to 10-0 after six frames.
Holt was masterful retiring seven in a row at one point. Bernard entered in the seventh and College of Charleston presented their best chance to score.
The Cougars threatened after a Greg Blake double, but a strong relay from Goodwin in right field nailed Jose Rodriguez at the plate to preserve the shutout.
Messer fanned two Cougars and registered a foul out to earn the final three outs and give Carolina the victory.
Carolina will return to action Friday traveling to Virginia for a three-game set.
