CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. --- A two-out RBI single off the bat of John Barr scored Jarrett Parker in the bottom of the ninth to propel No. 1 Virginia over No. 21 North Carolina 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field. Matt Harvey suffered the tough luck loss as UNC fell to 32-18 overall and 11-14 in the ACC. Virginia won their twelfth straight game improving to 41-9 on the year and 19-6 in league play.
Harvey (6-3) was masterful in 8.2 innings of work registering six strikeouts and walking just three. The junior allowed five of his seven hits in the first three innings, but retired 16 of 17 batters faced from the third to ninth innings.
Starter Danny Hultzen lasted a season-low five innings and posted a season-high four walks. Braden Kline was strong in three innings of relief and Kevin Arico (1-1) registered the win allowing one run in the ninth.
Jacob Stallings and Mike Cavasinni paced the Tar Heels offensively with two hits apiece. Ryan Graepel and Tommy Coyle each added a hit, but 11 runners left on base plagued the Tar Heels. Levi Michael, drove in the tying run, but his career-best 16 game win streak was snapped.
Virginia darted out to an early 1-0 lead after an RBI single off the bat of Parker scored Dan Grovatt. Harvey recorded two quick outs, but then allowed a hit-by-pitch and two straight singles before getting out of the first.
Carolina tied the score at one in the second after three consecutive two-out singles, capped by a Cavasinni RBI base hit. Coyle started the rally parachuting a single into right field and Stallings followed with line drive to right field.
The Cavaliers quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the frame after a two-out RBI single off the bat of Phil Gosselin scored John Hicks. Harvey appeared to pick off Hicks at first, but the attempt was ruled a balk allowing the sophomore to advance to second.
Harvey settled in to retire nine in a row from the third through the fifth inning. Hultzen labored walking four as his day ended after five frames. Carolina threatened to score often, but left eight of base through five.
The Tar Heels staff ace had everything working in the late innings. The junior made a spectacular play on a Keith Werman bunt attempt, diving and flipping the ball to first from his stomach to get the out.
The Tar Heels knotted the score at two in the top of the ninth on two hits and one Cavalier error. Stallings and Cavasinni again helped manufactured a run with back-to-back singles. With two outs, Michael then delivered a hard hit ball up the middle that Werman could not handle at second, allowing Stallings to cross the plate.
Harvey worked into the ninth allowing his first hit since the third frame on a Parker infield single that sizzled fair down the third base line. The junior moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Harvey registered at pair of quick outs. Barr then hit a two-out 3-2 pitch through the left side to score Parker and give Virginia the walk off victory.
The two teams will have a quick turnaround with game two of the doubleheader set to start 45 minutes after game one.
