ATHENS, GA. - On the opening day of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships singles action, a pair of North Carolina players split their matches in the Round of 64. Senior Clay Donato won in straight sets while freshman Jose Hernandez lost a tough three-setter.
Donato, ranked 43rd nationally, won a first set tiebreaker en route to a first-round win over 50th-ranked Neal Slupski of LSU. Donato now advances to second round singles to be played Thursday. Donato won by a score of 7-6, 6-3.
Hernandez, ranked No. 44, was matched up with No. 47 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois in what proved to be a match as even as the rankings would indicate. Nevolo won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 before Hernandez won the second set 6-0. Nevolo then came back to win the third set in a close 6-4 decision.
Donato and junior Stefan Hardy will also be in action in doubles Thursday in first round play.
