ATHENS, GA. - UNC's Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy have advanced to the semifinals in doubles at the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. This marks the second year Carolina has had a doubles team reach the final four of the bracket after Taylor Fogleman and Donato combined to do so last year.
Donato and Hardy won their third straight match Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia as they defeated Brad Cox and Eric Quigley in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
Donato and Hardy will now face the No. 2-seeded team of Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee in the semifinals Sunday. Sandgren and Smith had to rally from a set down to oust Iain Atkinson and Steven Forman of Wake Forest 6-7, 7-5, 6-3. Sandgren and Smith were the 2009 NCAA runners-up in doubles after they lost a year ago to Michael Shabaz and Dominic Inglot of Virginia. Inglot sand Shabaz had beaten UNC's Donato and Fogleman in the semifinals 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Match time Sunday is TBA.
UNC had not had a doubles team advance as far as the NCAA semifinals at any time between 1973 and 2008 but Tar Heel doubles team, both including Donato, have now pulled off the trick in back to back years. The last UNC team to reach the finals was Rich McKee and Fred McNair in 1973.
