Tar Heels Advance At Dad Vails

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - All three North Carolina boats turned in strong performances in Friday's heats to earn spots in Saturday's semifinals at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The Tar Heel varsity eight and varsity four both took second place, while the second varsity eight was third in its heat.
With UNC's exams wrapping up this week, the team didn't leave Chapel Hill until Thursday morning, arriving in Philadelphia late Thursday night with no time to practice on the course before racing. "I'm really excited about what the team did today and how they handled racing right after exams," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "This week there's been a little bit of stress with exams and a lack of sleep with exams and then the late departue. But I felt like we handed that well."
Racing at the largest collegiate regatta in the U.S., the UNC varsity four finished in a time of 7:29.71 in its heat. Racing in the varsity four were Sarah Cook (coxswain), Kristi Roblin (stroke), Lindsay Paterniti, Toni Moran and Jasmine Dennis (bow).
Carolina's varsity eight crossed in 7:00.37 with a lineup of Emma Shaw (coxswain), Kelsey Grich (stroke), Alex McClelland, Megan McMullin, JoAnne Rogers, Sarah Day, Blair Meiggs, Andi Drabot and Brittany Walsh (bow).
The Tar Heels' second varsity eight finished third in 7:45.12. The lineup was Jennifer Nowicki (coxswain), Sefe Emokpae (stroke), Erin Berg, Alex Biggers, Liz Teel, Shelby Austin, Claire Wardius, Jessica Crumpler and Leah Kosow (bow).
"Everyone is excited about tomorrow," Haney said. "We're looking forward to capitalizing on the success we had today and excited about the fact that all three boats advanced to the semifinals."
