GREENVILLE, N.C. -
The North Carolina women's golf team is in 11th place after carding a four-over-par 292 in the second round of the NCAA East Regional being played at Ironwood Country Club. The Tar Heels have a 10-over 586 total, 19 strokes behind team leader Duke, but just five shots out of eighth place which is needed to advance on to the NCAA Championships.
"The team played well today overall," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "Conditions were a little bit tougher and we hung in there very well. We kinda faltered towards the end with a few bogeys coming in, but we also countered that with some birdies.
"Overall, I was pleased with how we played. I think we certainly have a chance tomorrow. If we just go out and continue making birdies and eliminate a few of the other scores, then I think we're gonna do very well. We're looking forward to tomorrow, looking forward to the competition and hopefully we'll come out headed to Nationals."
Two Tar Heels, senior Kate Thomas and sophomore Catherine O'Donnell, fired a one-under-par 71 in the second round. Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia, has a one-over 145 total and is tied for 29th place while O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., stands at three-over 147 and is tied for 44th. Courtney Gunter is tied with Thomas for 29th at one-over 145. The junior from Matthews, N.C., carded a two-over 74 in the second round. Junior Sarah Thead, from Poway, Calif., shot a 78 on Friday and is tied for 67th with a seven-over 151 total, one stroke ahead of Jordan Allyne who is tied for 75th at 152. Allyne, a junior from Bellevue, Wash., fired a four-over 76 for the second day in a row.
Duke fired an 11-under-par 277 in the second round to surge into the team lead with a nine-under 567 total. Tennessee is three strokes back at six-under 570 after carding a one-under 287 on Friday. Pepperdine is in third place at 571, South Carolina is fourth at 574 while Auburn, the first-round leader, is fifth at 577. Rounding out the top eight teams are Vanderbilt at 579, Tulane at 580 and Florida at 581. The top eight teams and top two individuals, not on those eight teams, advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
There's a crowd atop the individual leaderboard as four players are tied for the lead at five-under-par 139 - South Carolina's Katie Burnett, Duke's Kim Donovan, Pepperdine's Danielle Kang and Texas Tech's Rosalyn Kim. Nina Muehl of East Tennessee State, the first round leader, and Erica Popson of Tennessee are tied for fifth place with four-under 140 totals. A trio of players is tied for seventh place at three-under 141 - Georgia State's Iliska Verwey, Pepperdine's Jessica Wallace and Auburn's Carlie Yadloczky.
