Carolina Sweeps Campbell, Sagula Captures No. 600

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Suzanne Haydel notched a game-high nine kills to lead North Carolina over Campbell 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-20) Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. The Tar Heels improve to 1-1 on the year and give head coach Joe Sagula his 600th career victory, a feat only 17 coaches in NCAA Division-I history have ever accomplished.
Haydel led a balanced UNC attack that registered a .224 hitting percentage and 49 kills. Heather Henry and Courtney Johnston each chipped in eight kills to round out the Carolina offense. Erica Behm posted 23 assists and 12 digs, while Kaylie Gibson posted a match-high 16 digs.
"It is a tribute to all the players who have ever worn the Carolina blue," head coach Joe Sagula said of his 600th career win. "It is a honor and privelege to work with this great university. I am excited the win came under this group of players."
The Tar Heels flashed out to an early 9-3 lead and never trailed winning the opening set 25-15. Carolina displayed a balanced attack posting a .300 hitting percentage in the first frame. Seven different Tar Heels posted at least one kill with Haydel leading all players with five.
Carolina finished the second frame on a 12-4 run to claim the second set 25-14. The Tar Heels benefited from seven Campbell attack errors and registered five serve aces to earn a 2-0 lead. Christine Vaughen notched three kills and Aleksandra Georgieva matched a career-best five kills to pace the Carolina offense.
Campbell fired off an 5-0 run to knot the score at 19 in the third and final set, but the Tar Heels proved too much claiming the third frame 25-20. Johnston posted six of her eight kills in the final set, while Emily McGee and Henry each chipped in four apiece. Henry sealed the win with a kill to give the Tar Heels the sweep and Sagula his 600th career victory.
Freshman Amy Parlier appeared in her first collegiate match Saturday. The Boulder, Colo., native registered one solo block in her first collegiate action.
Sagula now posts 397 of his 600 wins in Carolina blue. The veteran head coach is just three wins away from 400 at Carolina and six Atlantic Coast Conference wins away from becoming the first coach in ACC history to ever earn 200 or more victories.
Carolina will close out the 2010 Carolina Classic hosting Villanova (1-1) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. from Carmichael.
