Tar Heels Continue Strong Play At Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Shinann Featherston's flight three singles win and the second doubles title of the fall for Jelena Durisic and Tessa Lyons highlighted play for North Carolina in the annual Furman Fall Classic this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center. Featherston was one of four Tar Heels to advance to a singles flight title match, while Durisic and Lyons grabbed the flight two doubles crown.
In flight one, sophomore Zoe De Bruycker had another impressive showing. After defeating No. 39 Keri Wong of Clemson in the quarterfinals, De Bruycker rolled past Tennessee's Brynn Boren in the semis, 6-3, 6-4. The Saratoga, Calif., standout then faced No. 13 Josipa Bek in the final, falling in a tight three-setter, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
Durisic rebounded from an opening-round loss in flight two to post a pair of victories. UNC's lone senior upset No. 58 Dijana Stojic of South Carolina, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, before beating Furman's Margaret Boyette in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Featherston was impressive in reaching the flight three final, topping Northwestern's Kate Turvy and South Carolina's Katarina Popova in straight sets. The Rockaway Park, N.Y., junior was then awarded the title after Vanderbilt's Alex Leatu defaulted. Featherston did post another win, however, defeating Northwestern's Linda Abu Mushrefova in an added match, 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Gina Suarez-Malaguti (flight four) and Lyons (flight five) also advanced to their respective flight championships. Suarez-Malaguti scored straight-set wins over Northwestern's Stacey Lee and South Carolina's Miki Jocic before falling to Lauren Mira of Vanderbilt in the final, while Lyons ousted Michele Stanford of Furman and Maria Belaya of Clemson before dropping the final to Maddy Saari-Bystrom of South Carolina.
Flight six singles matches were not bracketed, but junior Jennifer Stone posted three wins, including a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Clemson's Caroline Magnusson.
In flight one doubles play, Featherston and sophomore Lauren McHale scored an impressive 8-5 win over Clemson's Bek and Wong, the nation's fifth-ranked tandem, in the third-place match.
Flight two saw Durisic and Lyons turn in their second championship performance in as many weeks, culminating in an 8-6 win over Jennifer Meredith and Whitney Wofford in the final.
Stone and freshman Laura Slater teamed up for the first time in the flight three draw and advanced to the final with wins of 8-3 and 8-4.
Next up for Carolina is a trip to the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Pre-qualifying for that tournament begins on Oct. 2.
