
Carolina Falls to Virginia, Draws Appalachian State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Corey Mock won his fourth and fifth consecutive matches, but the North Carolina wrestling team fell to Virginia and wrestled to a draw against Appalachian State in a Friday night doubleheader at Carmichael Arena. With the results, Carolina falls to 6-6-1 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference action.
Carolina opened the night with a 28-6 loss to Virginia, as Mock and 141-pounder Mike Rappo earned victories for the Tar Heels. In the nightcap, Carolina and ASU wrestled to a 19-19 tie, as the teams split the ten matches. Mock earned a technical fall victory while Thomas Ferguson and Zac Bennett took major decisions. Pat Owens and Danny Lopes recorded decisions for the Tar Heels.
Virginia 28, North Carolina 6
Virginia ran out to a quick 9-0 lead via a pin by Matt Snyder at 125 pounds and a tight 4-2 victory for Joe Spisak over Carolina's Pat Owens. The Tar Heels got on the board at 141 pounds, where senior Mike Rappo defeated Gus Sako in a 7-3 decision. Rappo registered a takedown in each of the first two periods to grab control and a third-period reversal clinched the bout for Rappo.
At 149 pounds, UNC's Nick Stabile and Derek Valenti wrestled evenly for most of the match, but a second-period escape and the accumulation of riding time gave Valenti a 2-0 win. Freshman Corey Mock responded for Carolina, moving to 3-0 in the ACC with a 9-3 victory over Shawn Harris. Mock, ranked No. 19 in the initial coaches' poll this week, led throughout, taking control with a first-period takedown and padding the lead with two reversals and a two-point near fall.
Following Mock's victory, the Cavaliers recorded five straight victories to close out the match and capture a 28-6 victory. Fourth-ranked Chris Henrich earned a major decision victory (14-3) at 174 pounds over Carolina's Thomas Ferguson. UNC's Zac Bennett, who entered the contest 2-0 in the ACC, dropped a close 5-2 decision to No. 20 Mike Salopek. Jedd Moore (165), Jon Fausey (184) and Jack Danilkowicz (heavyweight) also earned decisions for Virginia, who improves to 14-5 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
North Carolina 19, Appalachian State 19
After Appalachan State took a 6-0 lead with a Tony Gravely pin at 125 pounds, Carolina knotted the score with decisions from Owens and Danny Lopes. Owens earned two takedowns in the first period and never gave up control in an 8-3 win over Chris Johnson of ASU. Lopes then defeated Mike Kessler 4-3 in a back-and-forth decision at 141 pounds.
Stabile dropped his second consecutive hard-fought decision at 149, falling to Russell Benner 3-2 as the Mountaineers regained the lead, 9-6. Mock put Carolina back on top with a dominating technical fall win, using four three-point near falls to defeat John Blakely 15-0. In the 165-pound bout, the lead changed hands once again as ASU's Kyle Blevins defeated Thomas Scotton, 2-0, to give the Mountaineers a 12-11 lead.
After a scoreless first period at 174 pounds, Ferguson took control with a reversal and earned three three-point near falls in a convincing 14-0 victory, putting Carolina back up by a 15-12 score. ASU's Austin Trotman responded by defeating Antonio Giorgio 12-3 and giving the Mountaineers a 16-15 advantage. Bennett again gave Carolina the lead, as he took down Paul Glover just 48 seconds in the 197-pound bout and kept control throughout in an 11-0 major decision victory. Entering the heavyweight contest, the Tar Heels held a 19-16 lead.
After UNC's Ben Brooks and Marc Tyson exchanged takedowns, regulation ended in a 1-1 tie. No points were scored in the first sudden-victory period, and the wrestlers exchanged escapes in the dual 30-second periods. The second sudden-victory session again went scoreless, and they again exchanged takedowns, but Tyson earned the victory due five seconds of riding time, and the teams ended the contest tied at 19. ASU is now 6-7-1 overall.
