Hernandez Scores First Round Triumph

QUEENS, N.Y. - University of North Carolina junior Jose Hernandez has advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2011 United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Hernandez triumphed in his first round match Thursday afternoon at the USTA=Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. by defeating Jamie Whiteford of the College of William & Mary 6-3, 7-6.
Hernandez will play in the Round of 16 Friday against #8 seed Dennis Nevolo of Illinois. Nevolo dispatched Kyle McMorrow of Washington in straight sets Thursday 6-2, 6-2.
After winning the first set 6-3, Hernandez was in control of the second set, leading 5-2 and then serving for the match at 5-3. But Whiteford did not go easily and he rallied to force a tiebreaker.
Two rounds are scheduled for Friday -- Round of 16 play followed by quarterfinal action.
