Improvement was the story for the North Carolina rowing team, which closed out its fall schedule racing at the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Saturday and Sunday. Across the board, the Tar Heels improved on their results from last season against a competitive field.
On Saturday in the women's championship 8+ race, UNC's A boat was 12th in 16:49.0 and the B boat was 21st in 17:40.4.
In the women's championship 4+, UNC's A boat was 8th in 18:21.3 and the B boat was 18th in 18:55.6.
In the women's college & club novice 8+, UNC took 11th in 18.40.1.
"The championship events have become increasingly competitive over the past few years as more fast programs have opted to race the Hooch," said Brie Tyler, UNC's varsity assistant coach. "It's taken us a few years to adjust to the speed - in 2008 we had boats in the top 10 and the last few years we've had boats in middle of the pack.
"This year in the championship eight we improved by three spots and finished 12th this year. Our time was faster, so that was a move in the right direction. The second eight came in 21st this year after 30th last year so also a move in the right direction. In the championship fours, our first four came in eighth and last year our first boat was 23rd. So we were really pleased with the results there. "
On Sunday, Tar Heel coxswain Emma Shaw raced in the women's lightweight 1x race, finishing 10th in 23:38.2. Carolina fielded four boats in the pairs, finishing 15th (Jasmine Dennis, Blair Meiggs) in 20:49.8, 23rd in 21:19.8 and 24th in 21:31.6. The D boat did not finish. "There was only one senior in the pairs we sent out, so we're excited to see what happens next year since we had a pretty young group racing this year," Tyler said.
"This year the Hooch organizers changed the race and cancelled the C and D events, so we weren't able to race as many people a we would have liked," Tyler said. "But we're very happy with the A and B boats' results since they're faster than last year and we placed significantly higher in both of our A boat events."
