CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Nick Stabile and Thomas Ferguson earned decisions but No. 14 Nebraska proved too strong as the Cornhuskers defeated North Carolina 31-6 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. Carolina's dual record falls to 8-9-1 with the defeat and Nebraska improves to 12-4.
After being honored as part the Senior Day festivities prior to the match, the 149-pound Stabile fought back from a 2-1 deficit with a third-period reversal to take the lead over Ross Grande. He was able to ride out the final minute to capture the 3-2 victory.
Ferguson closed the match with a 3-1 win over Nebraska's Caleb Kolb. After a scoreless first period, the 174-pound junior took the lead with a reversal. Kolb registered an escape but was not able to take the lead as Ferguson rode out the third period from the top position.
With the match beginning at the 184-pound weight class, Nebraska jumped out to a commanding 21-0 lead by recording victories in the first six matches, the first three coming from wrestlers ranked in the top 13. Included in that stretch were five decisions and an injury default at heavyweight due to Carolina's Ben Brooks being injured within the first 30 seconds of his bout with 12th-ranked Tucker Lane.
At 184 pounds, Carolina freshman Antonio Giorgio was defeated by 11th-ranked Josh Ihnen, 6-0. 197-pounder Zac Bennett then had his five-match winning streak snapped against No. 13 Andy Johnson. The two entered the third period tied at two, but Johnson registered three takedowns in the period to win 10-4. The Cornhuskers also received decisions at 125, 133 and 141 pounds.
After Stabile's victory, Carolina's Corey Mock was pinned at 157 pounds by Tyler Koehn. Mock led 3-0 entering the third period, but Koehn registered an escape and was eventually able to gain control and recorded the fall with eight seconds remaining in the contest.
Nebraska's final victory came when top-ranked 165-pounder Jordan Burroughs ran his record to 28-0 with a 24-9 technical fall victory over Thomas Scotton, No near fall points were earned, so the Cornhuskers were awarded four team points.
Prior to the match, Carolina honored its four seniors: Stabile, Scotton and 141-pounders Danny Lopes and Mike Rappo. The Tar Heels are return to action Wednesday when they host The Citadel at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Arena in the season's last dual contest.
