CHAPEL HILL- North Carolina track and field assistant coach Nadine Faustin-Parker received a Village Pride Award Sunday from 1360 WCHL radio for her relief efforts for the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
During 2010, WCHL honored a community member each day for their service on the radio station. Parker and other recipients were honored at a banquet Sunday in Chapel Hill.
The UNC track and field program participates regularly in community service events, and Parker, who is orginally from Haiti, led the efforts of the program to send much-needed goods to the country after the earthquake disaster.
"When I learned of the disaster the night of January 12, 2010, I immediately dropped to my knees to pray for my family and friends safety," Parker said. "Next, I wanted to jump on a plane and save all of Haiti. Obviously, it was not possible for me to lend an immediate helping hand within the country but there was something I could do for the country. Holding the clothing and monetary drive was the least I could do.
"I am very thankful that our head coach, Dennis Craddock, allowed me to use a room in the Eddie Smith Field House to collect and hold donations. Also during the spring semester 2010 the coaching staff and athletes informed me that they wanted to donate their ACC gifts- backpacks- which left me speechless. To all of the UNC-CH community, I thank you! We did it! We were able to reach and help others," Parker said.
An alumnus of UNC, Parker is in her fourth year with the Tar Heel track and field program as the director of operations and admninistration and her second year as an assistant coach.
