Tar Heels Claim Two Wins On Day 1 of VT Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va.- Junior Ashley Verplank and senior LaToya James led the Tar Heels on Day 1 of the Virginia Tech Challenge with wins in their events. The two day meet continues Saturday with a full day of competition beginning at 11 a.m.
Verplank took the mile in a season-best time of 4:39.76, which moves her up to the No. 11 spot in the NCAA, and should secure a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Senior LaToya James claimed a win in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.30.
Junior Brittany Carroll took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.74), and freshman Isaac Presson finished fourth in the men's mile with a time of 4:03.81. Also in the men's distance events, freshman Alex Deir took fifth in the men's 3,000 (8:31.61) and John Raneri took eighth (8:39.38).
