The North Carolina women's golf team kicked off its spring campaign Sunday, struggled a bit with a 10-over-par 307 total and stands in 17th place after the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate played at English Turn Golf and Country Club.

Junior Cathernine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was the low Tar Heel firing a three-over 75 and is tied for 33rd place after the first round. O'Donnell's round included an eagle 3 on the par 5 sixth hole. Allie White, a junior from Lancaster, Ohio, finished one stroke back at four-over 76 in a tie for 47th. Three Tar Heels, all freshmen, carded a six-over 78 and are deadlocked in 65th place - Jackie Chang from Paradise Valley, Ariz., Katherine Perry from Cary, N.C. and Casey Grice from College Station, Tex., who is competing as an individual. Courtney Gunter, a sophomore from Matthews, N.C., shot 81 and is tied for 83rd.

Host Tulane leads the field of 17 teams by firing an even par 288 in the first round. Duke is two strokes back in second place at 290. LSU is third at 291, Arizona State is fourth at 293 and Vanderbilt is fifth at 294.

Laetitia Beck of Duke grabbed the individual lead after firing a six-under 66 in the first round. Two players from LSU, Jacqueline Hedwall and Megan McChrystal, are three shots back at three-under 69 in a tie for second place. Three players are deadlocked in fourth place at two-under 70 - Vanderbilt's Megan Grehan, Florida's Isabelle Lendl and Tulane's Ashley McKenney.

The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday at English Turn Golf and Country Club, a par 72, 6,105-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
