CHAPEL HILL --- Carolina Softball has joined efforts with the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and will host its third annual "Strike Out Cancer" event on Saturday, April 2nd at 1 p.m. against Virginia. The Tar Heels will sport navy shirts with a teal and white logo in support of ovarian cancer research.
Former Tar Heel Jamie (Shaver) Mayberry, who has battled ovarian cancer, will be throwing out the first pitch. Shaver played for the head coach Donna J. Papa and the Tar Heels from 1993-96 where she starred as the Tar Heels' second baseman.
"I am truly honored and appreciative for this opportunity that Coach Papa and the University have given me to bring Ovarian Cancer awareness to the forefront. The four years under Coach Papa were very instrumental in preparing me for the challenges I have faced. I look forward to sharing this knowledge with the team and whoever else will listen," Jamie Mayberry said.
Teal ballons will be released in honor of cancer survivors prior to the first pitch. The UNC Softball Camp will be selling t-shirts for $20.00. All profits will be donated to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center benefitting research for ovarian cancer. Terri Houston, the Senior Director of Diversity & Multicultural Programs, is slated to sing the National Anthem.
