GREENSBORO, N.C. -
The North Carolina women's golf team fired a 2-over par 286 in the second round of the ACC Championships and lead the field of nine teams heading into Sunday's final round at Sedgefield Country Club. The Tar Heels' 7-over 575 total puts them 24 strokes ahead of second-place Duke and Virginia.
"The conditions were very tough and our team played some phenomenal golf," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "We played one shot at a time, not worrying about the outcome and playing with confidence. We truly did that. We hit some great shots and some not so great shots, but the team didn't let it rattle them. We need to go out tomorrow and play like it's day one."
Carolina junior Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, fired a 4-over 74 in the second round and is tied for the individual lead with a 2-under 140 total. Another junior, Catherine O'Donnell, led the Tar Heels on Saturday as she fired a 4-under 67, the low round of day for all individuals. O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., carded four birdies and just one bogey on her way to an even par 142 total which moved her up to a tie for third place. Freshman Casey Grice fired a 1-over 72 in the second round while another freshman, Katherine Perry, carded a 2-over 73. Perry, a native of Cary, N.C., is alone in fifth place at 2-over 144 while Grice, from College Station, Texas, is tied for ninth place at 7-over 149. Jackie Chang, a freshman from Paradise Valley, Ariz., carded a 77 for a 154 total and is tied for 23rd place.
Play was halted for three hours for a lightning and rain storm delay. The delay began at 1 p.m. and play resumed at 4 as storms and tornadoes raced across the state.
"This morning we were talking about what movie to going to watch today," said Mann. It looked just terrible here and we did not anticipate playing. I am amazed we were able to get the round in today and I'm certainly pleased we were."
Carolina held onto its first-round lead by once again firing the low round of the day, a 2-over-par 286 for a 7-over 575 total. Duke carded an 18-over 302 on Saturday for its 31-over 599 total and is tied with Virginia, which shot a 304, for second place. Florida State is in fourth place at 602 and Wake Forest is fifth at 606.
Carolina's Allie White and Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods are deadlocked for the individual lead with 2-under-par 140 totals. Woods shot a 2-under 70 for the second day in a row while White shot a 3-over 74 after firing a 5-under 66 in Friday's first round. Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell and Maryland's Jessie Hollandsworth are tied for third place at even par 142 while Tar Heel Katherine Perry is alone in fifth place at 2-over 144. Three players are tied for sixth place at 148 - Virginia's Nicole Agnelio, Duke's Stacey Kim and Florida State's Macarena Silva. Another trio of players is tied for ninth place with 149 totals - Carolina's Grice, and Duke's Kim Donovan and Lindy Duncan.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Sunday at Sedgefield Country Club, a par 71, 6,181-yard layout. Live scoring will be available on www.Golfstat.com. The Tar Heels begin teeing off at 9:40 Sunday morning.
