CHAPEL HILL --- Prior to the North Carolina and Elon softball game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, a stadium seat in UNC's beautiful Anderson Stadium will be dedicated to Ray Chandler, who passed away in September 2010. Chandler is a longtime friend of the program and North Carolina softball legend.
Head coach Donna J. Papa and Chandler enjoyed a great softball working relationship for 20 plus years. A native of Tobaccoville, N.C., Chandler was the founder of the Carolina Cardinals ASA fastpitch organization and a member of the North Carolina Softball Hall of Fame. The first youth fastpitch ASA group registered in North Carolina has sent nearly 20 talented softball players to UNC.
Papa expressed, "I was very fortunate to build a working relationship with Ray and was always impressed with his work with softball in our state." Current Tar Heels Brittany McKinney and Brittany Robinson were part of the Carolina Cardinals organization, including part of the 2006 ASA National Title.
Chandler's family will be in attendance and honored in remembrance of Ray Chandler with a ceremony prior to first pitch. Chandler's daughter Erin will throw out the first pitch and his daughter Monica will say a few words in his honor. UNC & Elon's contest slated for 7 p.m. start Wednesday at Anderson Stadium.
