CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 10 North Carolina used a seven-run fifth inning en route to an 8-3 win over visiting Coastal Carolina (24-13) Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Levi Michael paced the offense with a 2-for-4 two RBI performance and Kent Emanuel improved to 5-1 on the season by throwing three innings of one-run relief. The Tar Heels will welcome in No. 20 Miami for a three-game set starting Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Tar Heels run their home winning streak to 19 games with the win and improve to 21-1 in the friendly confines of Boshamer Stadium.
Kent Emanuel notched his fifth win of the year going three innings allowing just one run on four hits. The freshman did not walk a batter for the fourth straight time on the mound and recorded four punch outs in the victory.
Fellow freshman Andrew Smith earned the start going four innings allowing two runs, one earned, while striking out three batters.
Carolina fell behind early when the Chanticleers struck for a pair of runs in the top of the second inning taking advantage of a Carolina miscue.
A lead off bunt single from Tucker Frawley started things off for Coastal Carolina. K.J. McAllister attempted to follow Frawley's lead but bunted into a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning as Andrew Smith threw out Frawley at second.
Jacob May hit a come backer that Smith was able to get a glove on enough to deflect it towards Levi Michael at shortstop but Michael over ran the ball allowing McAllister to advance to third.
Scott Woodward provided the first runs of the contest when he singled up the middles plating both McAllister and May to give Coastal a 2-0 advantage.
Carolina put a pair of runners on in both the third and fourth innings but were unable to cut into the Chanticleer lead.
Emanuel came on in the top of the fifth and allowed just one hit while tossing a scoreless inning in relief of Smith before the Tar Heel bats came to life.
Jacob Stallings and Greg Holt rapped back-to-back doubles to open the top of the fifth before Coastal Carolina ran into some control issues.
Matt Roberts walked to load the bases as Stefan del Pino came on in relief and issued a RBI walk to Tommy Coyle to make the score 2-1. Chaz Frank would be hit by a pitch to drive in the game-tying run before Levi Michael earned his 34th walk of the year to provide the go-ahead run making the score 3-2.
The ACC's RBI leader added to his total and blew the game open when Colin Moran delivered the big hit in the inning, a bases-clearing double into the left center field gap scoring Frank, Coyle and Michael and making the lead 6-2.
Jesse Wierzbicki followed with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners with nobody out and Ben Bunting made it 7-2 driving in Moran from third during a 6-4-3 double play.
Emanuel kept the momentum on Carolina's side in the top half of the sixth as the freshman southpaw picked up three straight strikeouts to get the Tar Heels back up to the dish.
Levi Michael added his second RBI in as many innings when he drove in Tommy Coyle with a single in the bottom of the sixth to extend Carolina's lead to 8-2.
The Chanticleers pulled a run back in the top half of the seventh before sophomore Michael Morin came on in relief.
Morin entered with a runner on in the top of the eighth and calmly picked up a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to end the threat.
Morin threw another scoreless frame in the ninth to close out Carolina's 31st win of the season.
Greg Holt made his first career start in the field after making 18 starts over his freshman and sophomore seasons as the designated hitter. Holt finished the night 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Freshman Colin Moran became the fourth-fastest player in school history to reach the 50-RBI plateau with his bases-clearing double in the fifth.
Carolina will host No. 20 Miami this weekend in a three-game ACC Coastal division clash. First pitch is Friday night at 7 p.m.
