Tar Heels Release 2011 Schedule

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina men's soccer head coach Carlos Somoano announced his squad's 2011 schedule Monday. The Tar Heels will take on eight NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago and for the third consecutive season will face the team that knocked them out of the tournament.
The Tar Heels will play a pair of exhibition games to prepare for the season and will head down to Conway, S.C. to face off against 2010 Big South Champion Coastal Carolina on Aug. 19 before closing out the exhibition season on Aug. 21 at Charlotte.
The 2011 season opener will take place Aug. 27 when Carolina welcomes in UNC Wilmington for a 7 p.m. tilt in Fetzer Field in the first of 18 contests.
Carolina and Wake Forest will split the Nike Classic for the second consecutive season as both teams will host Oregon State and NCAA National Finalist Louisville over Labor Day weekend.
The matchup with Louisville marks the third straight year the Tar Heels will take on a NCAA College Cup opponent the very next year. In 2009 Carolina faced Maryland during the regular season, a year ago the Tar Heels hosted Akron in the Nike Classic and in 2011 will face the Cardinals.
Carolina opens Atlantic Coast Conference play Sept. 10 when it travels to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech before returning home to host James Madison Sept. 13.
Then the Tar Heels will go through their longest road stretch of the year playing three matches away from Chapel Hill in the span of a week. Carolina will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Wake Forest on Sept. 16 before heading down to Spartanburg, S.C. to play Wofford Sept. 20 and then will close out the road trip Sept. 23 in Charlottesville, Va. against Virginia.
Following the road swing the Tar Heels will play five consecutive matches at Fetzer Field, including three against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams.
The Tar Heels will close out September with games against NCAA Tournament squad Old Dominion on Sept. 27 before hosting Duke in the Triangle Derby on Sept. 30.
A visit from UNC Asheville (Oct. 4) and Clemson (Oct. 7) open the month of October before the Tar Heels do battle with another NCAA Tournament team in College of Charleston on Oct. 14.
A visit to Davidson on Oct. 18 precedes one of the annual conference battles for the Tar Heels when the Terrapins of Maryland come to Fetzer Field on Oct. 22 for a rare Saturday contest.
Carolina faces a tough stretch to close out the year as it heads to Columbia, S.C. for the North-South Derby on Oct. 25 before returning home to take on NC State on Oct. 28.
The Tar Heels will close out the regular season Nov. 2 when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College.
All games are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. this season.
