Carolina Golfers Rise Through The Ranks at NCAA Championships

The North Carolina women's golf team showed major improvements in round two of the NCAA Golf Championship, carding a 22-over-par 598. The Tar Heels are tied for 8th and were led by freshman Katherine Perry who fired a 2-under 70.
"It was obviously a much better day today for us. The girls played a lot better. They stuck the ball much better and they played with a lot more confidence," said Carolina head coach Jan Mann. "We are looking forward tomorrow to really going out there, playing well and moving up the leader board. "
Katherine Perry was the Tar Heels' low individual at 2-under 70. Coach Mann said Perry had a great round, hitting 16 of 18 greens. Perry, from Cary, N.C., is tied for 17th at 146. Freshman Jackie Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., finished at 1-over 73 and is tied for 30th at 149. Catherine O'Donnell and Casey Grice both fired 3-over 75. O'Donnell, the junior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., sits tied for 70th at 153 while Grice, the freshman native of nearby College Station, Tex., is tied for 43rd at 150. Coach Mann said she was impressed by the consistency in Grice's game and believes the extra support from her hometown followers has helped her in this tournament. Junior Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, carded a 6-over 78 and is in a tie for 117th at 162.
UCLA had to battle to maintain its led over the 24-team field at 8-over 584. Purdue, the reigning national champions, edged into second place at 11-over 587 while LSU, at 12-over 588, remained in third. Host Texas A&M is one stroke back is at 13-over 589. Vanderbilt and Virginia are tied for fifth at 15-over 591 and Florida sits alone in seventh at 16-over 592. There is a three-way tie for eighth at 22-over 598 among California, Tennessee and North Carolina.
Austin Ernst of LSU stole the individual lead from Virginia's Brittany Altomare. Ernst is at 6-under 138. Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta is in second at 3-under 141 and there is a tie for third at 2-under 142 among UCLA's Tiffany Lua, Florida's Mia Piccio and Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora. Tied for sixth at even par 144 are Brittany Altomare of Virginia, Anna Leigh Keith of Vanderbilt, Joanne Lee of California and Calle Nielson of Virginia.
The 72-hole event continues through Saturday at The Traditions Club, which features a par 72, 6,260-yard layout. The Traditions Club was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, a UNC graduate. The Tar Heels begin teeing off at 12:30 p.m. CDT for Thursday's second round.
