Carolina Golfers Second At NCAA East Regional

The North Carolina women's golf team moved up to second place after firing a 6-under-par 282, the low team round of the day, in the second round of the NCAA East Regional being played at LPGA International. Carolina has a 1-under 575 total and is just four strokes behind second-round leader Alabama. Freshmen Katherine Perry and Jackie Chang led the Tar Heels on Friday as both fired a 3-under-par 69.
"The team played extremely well today," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "I was very impressed by our freshman and how well they handled themselves. We've still got another day of competition and we're looking forward to the challenge. Our goal is certainly to come out on top and if we play like we have the last two days, then I think we've got a good shot at that."
Perry, from Cary, N.C. is tied for ninth place with an even par 144 total. Her round included six birdies and just three bogies. Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., moved up to a tie for 14th place with a 1-over 145 total after chipping in for a birdie on her last hole (hole #9). Her scorecard was highlighted by three birdies and the rest pars. Junior Allie White and freshman Casey Grice both fired an even par 72 on Friday. White, from Lancaster, Ohio, is tied for 14th place with Chang at 1-over 145. She was 2-over after eight holes, but fought back with birdies on her 13th and 17th holes (holes #4 and #8). Grice, from College Station, Texas, sits in a tie for 22nd place at 3-over 147. Junior Catherine O'Donnell carded a 2-over 74 on Friday and is tied for ninth place at even par 144.
Alabama leads the field of 24 team with a 4-under 571 total. The Crimson Tide fired a 4-under 284 in Friday's second round. The Tar Heels are four strokes back in second place at 575 after firing a 6-under 282. Purdue is in third place, five strokes behind the Tar Heels. Arizona State is fourth at 583, Coastal Carolina is fifth at 584, California is sixth at 585, Florida State is seventh at 592, Florida is eighth at 595 while Michigan State and Mississippi are tied for 10th place with 596 totals.
Stephanie Meadow of Alabama fired a 5-under-par 67 to grab the individual lead at 6-under 138. Carolina Powers of Michigan State is two strokes back at 4-under 140 after firing a 3-under 69 on Friday. California's Daniela Holmqvist and Florida State's Jessica Negron are tied for third place at 2-under 142 while four players are tied for fifth place at 1-under 143 - Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda, California's Pia Haibig, Alabama's Camilla Lennarth and Florida State's Maria Salinas. Carolina's O'Donnell and Perry are tied for ninth place at even par 144 along with Mississippi's Natalie Gleadall, Purdue's Laura Gonzalez and Alabama's Brooke Pancake.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Saturday at LPGA International, Legends Course, which features a par 72, 6,271-yard layout. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams advance on to the NCAA Championships May 18-21 in Bryan, Texas.
