Chapel Hill Super Regional ● Game 1
UNC Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Mike Fox
Opening Statement
“That was a good game. We anticipated a good pitching match with two really good arms out there. Obviously the key for us, and he pitched for us last week, was Patrick Johnson. What a great start for us. We needed a good start from him and we got it right out of the gate. His experience being in the post-season and pitching at that stage and this level really showed right out of the gate. We had a good first inning and got a couple of guys in scoring position. It was a good win for us. Two runs in the bottom of the eighth were certainly important after we gave up two in the top. It was a good win for us. Stanford is a great job and we will have our hands full tomorrow.”
Senior Starting Pitcher Patrick Johnson
On having his streak of 30 2/3 consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run:
“It was a good run. We got a lot of wins during it and we got another win today and that's all that matters”
On having coach Mike Fox back in the dugout after missing the Regional:
“It was good for us. He's been there all year. He's the leader of our team and it's nice to have things back to normal.”
Junior Right Fielder Seth Baldwin
On his reaction to failing to lay down a sacrifice bunt twice before homering in the seventh:
“I was definitely frustrated a little bit. I was actually thinking that I was probably going to bunt again. I got the chance to hit and thought about, 'Well, I got two strikes,' and tried to have some composure. I just tried to sit back and get a good pitch to hit.”
On whether or not he thought the homerun was going to carry the left field wall:
“Honestly, I didn't know for sure. I knew I hit it really solid, but I didn't even see it land or go out. I was just running.”
Senior Centerfielder Ben Bunting
On his running catch at the warning track in the sixth inning:
“Off the bat, I thought the ball had a chance to get out. But it definitely slowed up, kind of hung up in the air a little bit longer than I thought it would and I was like, 'maybe I can get to it.'”

Stanford Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Mark Marquess
Well, it was a great college baseball game. I thought the difference was Johnson; I think he was phenomenal. I thought he did a great job, was ahead most of the time, threw basically two (pitches), sometimes three, basically fastball (and) slider over the plate in any count. He did a great job. We had a couple of chances, not many, and he did a real good job of that. Obviously, it was a very close game. We made a couple of errors, gave them a couple of easy baserunners, then they got a hit, but that really wasn't the game. I thought Mark (Appel) got a little tired there, and left the ball up that the guy smoked to left field. That was a really big hit, then they added on a couple in the eighth which made a big difference. I just think it was all about a great pitching performance. I thought Mark did a good job, had a good pitching performance for us also. So, (it was) a great college baseball game. They're tough. I mentioned before, they got a lot of different ways they can beat you – a little power, speed, make good contact. But today was all about pitching.
Sophomore Pitcher Mark Appel
On Seth Baldwin's two-run home run in the seventh inning…
We were trying to just hit the outside corner. I missed low on the 0-2 pitch, then can't remember what the next pitch was. Then I tried to go back and just left it up, and he hit it. It was just a mistake, and he made me pay for it.
On his mindset when facing a pitcher like Patrick Johnson…
I don't know if I necessarily need to be finer. He obviously pitched a great game. My mindset is the same regardless of who is on the mound for the other team. We've played Texas, Vanderbilt, UCLA, just all these first-round draft picks. Johnson, I think, is up there as far as Friday night starters go. My mindset has been the same the entire season. Just pound the fastball down and mix in some off-speed.
Freshman First Baseman Brian Ragira
On if battling back builds some confidence for tomorrow…
I think, as a team, we're pretty confident. We're not getting down on ourselves. We're going to go out there and play with effort, play with a little attitude like we always do. We know we're a good team, so I think you'll see something out of us the next two days.
On if he thought the Cardinal would break through after scoring two runs.
Yeah, I think we hit some balls hard off of Johnson, just right at guys. I was just battling in there and trying to touch it with two (strikes) and we were fortunate (on his infield single). I thought we had a good shot going into the ninth, but they battled back also and put two runs on the board. That was something that they did well.
