College World Series Game One
Overall Team Notes
• Saturday marked the ninth College World Series appearance in program history for Carolina, and the fifth in the last six seasons.
• With the loss, UNC is now 14-18 all-time in CWS play, including a 12-10 record in the last five appearances. The Tar Heels dropped the opening game of the CWS for the fifth time and the second straight appearance.
• With the loss, Carolina falls to 86-57 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, 51-25 under Mike Fox and 39-13 in the postseason since the start of the 2006 tourney.
Game Notes
• Carolina left a season-high 16 men on base Saturday.
• UNC has left nine runners or more on base every game of the NCAA Tournament.
• The two triples marked the fourth time this season that Carolina had at least two in a game.
Individual Notes
• With two runs batted in Saturday, Colin Moran became the second freshman in UNC history with at least 70 RBI in an initial campaign, joining Major Leaguer Dustin Ackley who had 74 in 2007. Moran has knocked in 71 runs in 2011.
• Moran drove in at least two runs for the 21st time this season and tallied his 23rd multi-hit game of the year.
• Moran registered at least three hits in a game for the eighth time this year.
• The three hits is the most in a CWS game by a Tar Heel since Ackley tallied five against Southern Miss in 2009.
• Starting pitcher Patrick Johnson matched a season high by allowing five runs (four earned).
• The five runs were two more than Johnson had allowed in his previous 45 innings combined.
• Sophomore OF Chaz Frank opened the bottom half of the first with his team-leading fourth triple of the year and finished 2 for 4 with two walks and a run scored.
• Senior OF Ben Bunting finished 2 for 4 with a walk and a run scored. Bunting is now 7 for 17 (.412) with five runs scored in five career CWS games.
