Moran, Jones Earn Battle of the Blues Top Performer Awards

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina first baseman Colin Moran and women's soccer forward Courtney Jones were recognized as the top performers for UNC against Duke in Continental Tire's "Battle of the Blues," which the Tar Heels won, 14-12.
Carolina has now won the multi-sport competition in four straight years and seven times in the last 10 years. UNC won in 2009-10 by the identical score of 14-12.
Moran, the ACC Freshman of the Year, led the Tar Heel baseball team to a three-game sweep over the Blue Devils by batting 5 for 9 with two doubles, two home runs and five runs batted in. The Rye, N.Y., native helped Carolina earn the No. 3 national seed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
Jones, a junior from Danville, Calif., scored three goals and added an assist in Carolina's 5-3 win over the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels are 33-2-1 all-time against Duke in women's soccer.
Carolina won two points in football and one point apiece in baseball, men's cross country, field hockey, women's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving, men's track and field, women's track and field and wrestling.
Duke won two points in both men's and women's basketball, and one point in women's cross country, fencing, men's golf, men's lacrosse, rowing, women's tennis and volleyball.
Each school won half a point for women's lacrosse and men's tennis as they split two decisions in both sports.
Other top performers for the Tar Heels include women's lacrosse forward Kara Cannizzaro, who had four goals and one assist in an 11-10 loss at Duke and had a goal and four assists in 17-8 win in ACC Tournament win; Bruno Castro, who scored the lone goal in UNC's 1-0 win in men's soccer; Adam Cunningham, who was sixth in the ACC Men's Cross Country Championship; men's basketball forward John Henson, who had a double-double in points and rebounds in all three games and had a career-high 18 rebounds in the ACC Tournament championship game; Jose Hernandez, who won in both singles and doubles to lead UNC to a 4-3 upset win over 10th-ranked Duke in men's tennis, clinching the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win at #1 singles; women's swimmer Katie Nolan, who won two individual events and a relay in a dual meet win over the Blue Devils; freshman Corey Mock, who registered an 18-5 major decision triumph in Carolina's wrestling victory; Catherine O'Donnell, who finished third and led the women's golf team to the ACC golf championship; Caitlin Van Sickle, who scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 field hockey win; men's swimmer Tyler Smith, who won the 100 breast and 100 fly in a dual meet win over Duke; and quarterback T.J. Yates, who completed 28 of 35 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown in UNC's 24-19 win at Duke.
The 2010-11 competition was the 11th in series history (formerly known as the Carlyle Cup). Carolina has won seven times and tied once.
