North Carolina 14, James Madison 0
Chapel Hill Regional ● Game Four
Game Notes
• With the win Carolina improved to 6-2 all-time versus James Madison and 3-0 in NCAA Tournament meetings.
• With a 4-0 victory against Maine on Friday and a 14-0 win against James Madison Saturday, UNC has shut out consecutive NCAA Tournament opponents for the first time in school history. The last time Carolina shut out two opponents in tournament play was in 1948 against Georgia Tech and George Washington, but those games were not consecutive.
• Saturday marked the 34th NCAA Tournament win for the Diamond Heels since 2006. Cal State Fullerton is second in wins over that time span and trails UNC by seven wins going into their regional game versus Stanford on Saturday.
• With the win, senior Patrick Johnson improved his season record to 12-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.36. Twelve wins puts Johnson in a four-way tie for second in single season wins at UNC. Greg Norris holds the record, earning 14 wins in 1978.
• Johnson moved into third in career strikeouts with 299 and a tie for sixth most in a single season with 113.
• Johnson has now claimed a win in six consecutive appearances. He has gone 23 innings without allowing a run—a streak spanning his last three starts.
• The 14-run victory is the largest margin of victory for the Tar Heels in NCAA Tournament play since they beat East Tennessee State 15-1 in 1978.
• All nine Tar Heels in the starting lineup reached base safely on Saturday, with seven recording base hits and seven scoring at least one run.
• UNC drew 10 walks Saturday, establishing a new school record for walks in a single season with 325. The record was previously held by the 1990 Tar Heels, who recorded 324 free passes.
• The Tar Heels tallied 15 hits against James Madison, the most since collecting 17 against UNC Wilmington on May 11 and the second-highest total of the season.
• Greg Holt homered in his first ever NCAA Tournament at-bat with a solo shot in the second inning. He went 4 for 5 on the night and knocked in four runs. His four-hit performance ties both season and career highs.
• Jacob Stallings tied a career best with three hits, going 3 for 5 Saturday night. Stallings is now batting .500 for the regional with a home run and 4 RBI.
