College Soccer News named its 2011 Pre-Season All-America squads on Monday and three Tar Heels were named to each of the three teams. Senior transfer Matt Hedges was named to the All-America First Team by CSN.
Hedges was named to the CSN Pre-Season All-America First Team after earning third team honors a year ago while helping lead Butler to an undefeated regular season record. The Carmel, Ind., native was part of a defense that allowed just 11 goals in 20 games during the 2010 season.
Junior Enzo Martinez was named to the second team by CSN. Martinez paced the Tar Heels with 25 points in 2010 on 10 goals and five assists. The Rock Hill, S.C., native was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Third Team in 2010.
Redshirt Junior Billy Schuler was selected for the third team after being a second team pre-season pick in 2010. Schuler played just two games of the 2010 campaign before suffering a season-ending injury. The Allentown, N.J., native earned NSCAA Third Team All-America honors as a sophomore when he led the Tar Heels in scoring with nine goals and five assists.
The Tar Heels opened practice on Aug. 10 and will head to Conway, S.C. Aug. 19 to open their exhibition season against Coastal Carolina before taking on Charlotte two days later in the Queen City.
