CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The third full season of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) is approaching the end and two of the six major player awards in the league have been won by former University of North Carolina players. Teammates Whitney Engen and Ashlyn Harris of the Western New York Flash have been named winners of the WPS Defender of the Year and US Coast Guard Goalkeeper of the Year Awards.
Voting was done by coaches, media and fans for the WPS's seven major awards.
Engen and Harris played together on a trio of national championship teams for the Tar Heels during their four-year careers from 2006-09. Each of those UNC teams also won Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles. Engen started at forward on the 2006 UNC national championship team which beat Notre Dame 2-1 in the finals and then was the center back on the 2008 and 2009 team which beat Notre Dame 2-1 and Stanford 1-0, respectively, in championship matches. Harris shared goalkeeping duties on the 2006 and 2007 teams with Anna Rodenbough and then started full-time for the title-winning 2009 squad.
