CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior defender Matt Hedges and junior midfielder Enzo Martinez were named to Soccer America's Preseason All-America squad on Tuesday a day after the publication tabbed the Tar Heels No. 3 in its preseason poll. Carolina opens the 2011 season on Saturday when it hosts UNC Wilmington at Fetzer Field with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
Hedges a College Soccer News Third Team All-America selection a year ago while at Butler will factor into the Tar Heels' backline plans for 2011. Hedges should immediately fill the vacated center back position of MLS SuperDraft first round pick Jalil Anibaba.
Martinez returns for his junior campaign after leading the Tar Heels in scoring during the 2010 season as he tallied 10 goals to go along with five assists. Martinez earned NSCAA Third Team All-America honors a year ago in helping to lead the Tar Heels back to the NCAA College Cup for the third consecutive year.
