NEWARK, Del. - Redshirt freshman Samantha Travers kicked off the scoring and finished the game with a hat trick as the top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat Lafayette 8-0 Sunday to improve to 5-0 on the season. The neutral-site matchup was played at the University of Delaware's Rullo Stadium, also the site of UNC's 6-0 win Friday over the host Blue Hens.
"It's a successful weekend when we come home with two shutouts," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I feel good about the development of our team - we're playing a lot of people and getting a lot of experience, and that will help us in the long run."
Travers scored her first goal just over 13 minutes into the game, sending her unassisted shot in from the left side of the cage. Senior Elizabeth Stephens made it 2-0 in the 20th minute, dribbling in from the right side and tipping the ball past Lafayette keeper Jessica Deutsch.
Five minutes later, junior Kelsey Kolojejchick scored her team-high seventh goal of the year, off a rebound. Travers' second goal of the day came on a penalty corner a minute before halftime, assisted by junior Katie Ardrey and senior Katelyn Falgowski.
Early in the second half, junior Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany scored back-to-back goals. The first, in the 37th minute, came on a penalty corner, assisted by sophomore Marta Malmberg. The second, in the 41st minute, came on a solo shot from the top of the circle.
Travers' third goal came on another penalty corner, again assisted by Ardrey and Falgowski, in the 42nd minute. The final goal came in the 60th minute and was the first of the season from sophomore Meghan Lyons, assisted by sophomore Sinead Loughran.
UNC outshot Lafayette 28-4 on the day, and had 14 corners to seven by the Leopards. Carolina goalkeepers Sassi Ammer and Caitlin Powers shared the shutout, with Ammer starting and playing the first half and Powers coming in at halftime to make three second-half saves.
The shutout was the fourth in five games this season for the Tar Heels, who scored 14 goals during the weekend's two games. "I feel good about us scoring goals, but what's even more important is the way we're moving the ball," Shelton said. "This was a very good developmental weekend for us."
Next up for UNC is a matchup with second-ranked Old Dominion, which visits Francis E. Henry Stadium on Friday for a 6 p.m. matchup. Carolina hosts Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m.
