Chapel Hill, N.C.- The Navy team broke open a close scrimmage on Thursday with a three-run seventh inning before going on to post a 6-0 win over the Blue team on a day that featured strong pitching as the teams went nine innings for the first time this Fall.
Colin Moran's two-run double in the seventh put Navy up 3-0. Matt Robert's single later in the inning put Navy up 4-0 before a two-run eighth put the scrimmage away.
The Navy squad had eleven hits and no errors, while the Blue squad could garner just two hits while committing one error. Cody Stubbs and Luis Paula had the only hits of the game for Blue. A total of five pitchers were used.
The next closed scrimmage will be this Friday afternoon at the Bosh. TarHeelBlue will have exclusive coverage of all of Carolina's scrimmages.
Scrimmage Highlighs: Seth Baldwin had an inside-the-park home run in the top of the eighth...Hobbs Johnson struck out the side in the fifth by fanning Colin Moran, Matt Roberts and Mike Zolk.
Coach Forbes comments: "I thought the umpire had a pretty big zone today and our pitchers took advantage of it, which is not always easy to do. They threw it where they're supposed to throw it. I thought all our guys did well attacking the strike zone. I couldn't be more pleased with the way all of them threw, one through five.
"I thought some guys had some great at bats, plus I think we played some great defense. Tommy Coyle played really well today, Zolk played really well, and Michael Russell had some really good at bats.
"Today's pitching philosophy was simply to get the hitters out. Our guys' arms are in good shape. We threw a lot of cutters and sliders today with a decent amount of curveballs. We're now in the position where you pretty much throw whatever you want to throw."
