CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a game that was delayed 45 minutes by lightning and finally played in a steady rain, the North Carolina field hockey team beat visiting Longwood 5-1 Wednesday evening at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The second-ranked Tar Heels improved to 7-1 with the win in their only mid-week game of the season. The Lancers fell to 3-6.
Four different players scored for the Tar Heels, who led 3-1 at halftime. The gamewinner came on a penalty corner in the 19th minute, when senior Teryn Brill stopped the ball and passed it to Caitlin Van Sickle. The junior powered a hard shot past Longwood goalkeeper Kaye Goulding to put the Tar Heels in the lead for good. They went up 2-0 three minutes later on another penalty corner goal, this one by redshirt freshman Samantha Travers, assisted by junior Katie Ardrey.
Longwood's goal came in the 26th minute on a penalty corner. Junior Kaity Byrum got the ball from Sarah Bietsch on a give-and-go and bounced a shot past UNC keeper Sassi Ammer to make the score 2-1.
Carolina scored another one before halftime, when junior Kelsey Kolojejchick's shot was tipped in by junior Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany in the 29th minute.
Kolojejchick, UNC's leading scorer, came up with two goals after halftime. In the 37th minute, she got a ball from senior Elizabeth Stephens and shot from five yards out for her eighth goal of the season. In the 44th minute, on another penalty corner, Kolojejchick redirected sophomore Marta Malmberg's shot into the goal from the right side to make the score 5-1.
UNC had 27 shots to three by Longwood, and the Tar Heels drew 13 penalty corners to the Lancers' 2.
Goulding played all 70 minutes in goal for Longwood, making 12 saves. Ammer and sophomore Caitlin Powers shared goalkeeping time for UNC, with each making one save. Next up for Carolina is the team's Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Saturday against Duke. The ninth-ranked Blue Devils visit Henry Stadium for a 1 p.m. matchup.
