Goodwin And D Turning In Clean Sheets
After allowing a goal in the first five matches of the season the Tar Heel defense has appeared to tighten up in the back as Carolina has not allowed a goal in its last three contests.
Goalkeeper Scott Goodwin registered five saves against Wake Forest and the defense held strong against Wofford as well not allowing a shot on goal. Goodwin followed with two saves against Virginia, including a crucial one in the opening minute.
The shutout streak is the longest since a string of three straight a year ago when UNC kept a clean sheet against Clemson, NC State and Boston College.
The last time Carolina turned in four straight clean sheets was in 2006 when the Tar Heels shut out William & Mary, UCF, Ohio State and Penn State to open the season.
UNC leads the ACC in goals allowed at five and 0.61 per contest.
Martinez Starting To Turn It On
Junior midfielder Enzo Martinez paced the Tar Heels in scoring last year by tallying 10 goals and five assists but had taken more of a distributor position in 2011 dishing out three assists in the first four games before erupting against James Madison.
Martinez found the back of the net two times against the Dukes while adding an assist and kept the streak going this past week tallying two goals and two assists.
The Rock Hill, S.C., native tallied the lone goal in the win over Wofford for his first game-winning goal of the campaign and had a foot in all three goals in the win at Virginia, picking up a goal and two assists in the win.
For his efforts Martinez was named to the College Soccer News National Team Of The Week.
Schuler And Tar Heels Scoring Early And Often
Carolina has scored 19 goals in the opening eight games of the season with seven wins.
The 2.38 goals per game average ranks second in the ACC.
Redshirt junior Billy Schuler has found the back of the net six times in 2011 as the forward picked up a goal each against UNC Wilmington, Louisville and James Madison, while tacking on a double against Oregon State.
Schuler has been credited with the game winning goal four times this year after notching the winner at Virginia.
Second Half Scoring Outburst
Carolina has outscored its opponents 19-5 on the year but have only managed to post a 4-3 advantage in the first half this season.
The Tar Heels have scored a remarkable 15 goals in the second half in 2011, while allowing just two scores after the halftime whistle.
Scouting Old Dominion
Entering this past weekend's match at George Mason, Old Dominion led the nation in scoring with 4.0 goals per contest but were held scoreless for the first time in 2011 as the Patriots claimed a 1-0 win.
Yannick Smith has paced the Monarchs' offense with six goals in five games this season, while adding an assist.
Sophomore Gideon Asante, who tallied twice against Carolina in 2010, ranks second on the team with three goals through five matches.
The Monarchs have allowed just four goals through the opening five matches of the season.
Mother Nature has not been kind to the Monarchs postponing their match against Navy and cancelling a match against West Virginia.
