Martinez Tapped As Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

Enzo Martinez of the UNC men's soccer team is the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for September 19-25, 2011 after leading Carolina to road wins at Wofford and Virginia, scoring twice and passing for two assists.

Junior midfielder Enzo Martinez led the Tar Heels to a pair of road victories on the week scoring a goal per match and distributing a pair of assists at Virginia. Martinez leads the ACC with six assists on the year and has tallied 16 points in eight matches to tie for third in the conference. The Rock Hill, S.C., native has posted four goals and three assists in his last four games, all Carolina wins.

Freshman tailback Giovani Bernard rushed 17 times for a career-high 155 yards and scored two touchdowns in Carolina's 35-28 loss at Georgia Tech. Carolina scored on the opening drive of the game with Bernard accounting for 52 of the 63 yards on the scoring drive, including a 4-yard score. He later had a 55-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 28. Bernard also added five receptions for 47 yards for 202 yards of total offense. Through four games, Bernard has rushed for 402 yards and six touchdowns.

Junior Jose Hernandez combined with senior Brennan Boyajian combined to win the top flight doubles at the UVA Ranked 4+1 Invitational over the weekend. The duo beat Stefan/Wyss of Maryland 8-4 in the finals. Hernandez also excelled in singles play as he reached the semifinals of the top flight and defeated Justin Shane of Virginia in the third-place match.

Senior Elizabeth Stephens scored the game winner 27 seconds into the second overtime period to give No. 2 UNC a 1-0 win over No. 9 Duke Saturday in the Tar Heels' ACC opener. The teams battled through 85 scoreless minutes before Stephens got the ball in front of Duke keeper Samantha Nelson, took a shot that was saved, then gathered the rebound and shot again, this time getting the ball into the cage to give Carolina the win. Stephens also added a goal and assisted on the game winner as UNC beat Davidson 5-0 on Sunday. She has four goals and three assists on the season.

Lucena finished fourth out of 208 runners at the Florida Invitational on Saturday and helped the women's team take second out of 19 teams. Lucena was the top finisher for the Tar Heels as she finished the 5k race in 17:51.98.
CASEY GRICE

Tar Heel sophomore Casey Grice tied for eighth place at the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview last weekend. Grice fired a 1-over-par 73 in the first and final rounds and an even par 72 in the second round. Her 2-over 218 total was six strokes behind Duke's Lindy Duncan and Alabama's Jennifer Kirby who both fired a 4-under 212. Grice led Carolina to a tie for fifth place at 22-over 886. The Tar Heels fired rounds of 298-290-298 and finished 13 strokes behind team champion UCLA. The 54-hole event was played at Vanderbilt's Legends Club, a par 72, 6,426-yard layout. This course is the site of next spring's NCAA Championships to be played May 22-25. The Tar Heels return to action Oct. 7-9 when they host the Tar Heel Invitational.
