Pair Of Tar Heels Taken In MLS SuperDraft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Senior defender Matt Hedges and junior midfielder Enzo Martinez were both selected in the first round of 2012 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday in Kansas City, Mo. Hedges and Martinez become the 10th and 11th Tar Heels to be picked in the MLS SuperDraft First Round since the inaugural draft of 1996.
Hedges became the third straight Tar Heel center back to be picked among the top 11 picks in the draft when FC Dallas took the Carmel, Ind., native 11th overall in the first round.
Hedges joins former Tar Heel Zach Loyd in Dallas who was taken fifth overall in the 2010 SuperDraft and Chicago Fire defender Jalil Anibaba who was picked ninth overall last year.
The towering center back becomes the fifth Tar Heel taken by FC Dallas as he joins Temoc Suarez (1997), Dax McCarty (2006) and Brian Shriver (2009).
Generation adidas signee Enzo Martinez became the 11th player in school history to be taken in the first round when Real Salt Lake took the playmaking midfielder 17th overall.
Martinez finished the season second the team with nine goals and distributed a team-high 17 assists to earn a second straight All-America honor.
The Rock Hill, S.C., native joins Jamie Watson from the 2005 MLS SuperDraft as Tar Heels taken by Real Salt Lake.
