BLACKSBURG, Va.- The UNC men's and women's track teams had a great showing in their first away meet of the season, winning three events as several Tar Heels recorded top-10 marks in the NCAA at the second day of the Hokie Invitational Saturday.
In addition to her win in the 400 Friday, senior Tasha Stanley combined with freshman Iman Wilkerson and seniors Zoey Russell and Danielle Brock to take first in the women's 4x400 in a time of 3:40.53, winning the race by more than three seconds and running the No. 10 relay time so far this season in the NCAA.
Senior Ashley Verplank, sophomore Lianne Farber and senior Marisa Dobbins swept the women's 1,000, as Verplank took first in 2:52.90, Farber finished second in 2:53.10 and Dobbins placed third in 2:53.63. Junior Chrishawn Williams added another win for Carolina, taking first in the women's long jump with a leap of 19-9 1/2.
The men's 4x400 team of junior Clayton Parros, freshmen O'Neal Wanliss and Javonte Lipsey, and sophomore Devon Carter finished second in 3:11.08, which gives them the No. 9 time in that event in the NCAA.
"We really had great chemistry as a team this weekend for our first away meet of the season," assistant head coach Josh Langley said. "I was glad to see the focus and the types of performances we had early on, which is important as we head down the road to ACCs and NCAAs later this season."
Sophomore Sandi Morris cleared 13-5 3/4 in the women's pole vault to take third and record the No. 8 height in the NCAA this season. Also for the women, Brock added a second-place finish in the women's 400 (54.89) and senior Elizabeth Mott took fifth in 56.08, while junior Ariel Roberts cleared 5-6 in the women's high jump to finish fourth.
On the men's side, sophomore Patrick Schellberg finished less than .2 seconds off first place to take second in the 1,000 in a time of 2:27.73. Freshmen Jack Driggs took third in the event (2:28.96), and Blake Williams finished eighth (2:30.54).
