Tar Heels Fall At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - North Carolina dropped its first ACC dual of the season on Saturday as Virginia claimed a 24-10 win over the Tar Heels in Charlottesville. The Tar Heels will look to bounce back on Sunday as they head to Blacksburg, Va. to take on No. 17 Virginia Tech at 2 p.m.
The dual started at 165 pounds and Virginia's Nick Sulzer lived up to his No. 15 ranking as he claimed a 10-1 major decision over Kyle Kiss to give Virginia an early 4-0 advantage.
Freshman Alex Utley pulled the Tar Heels back in the dual with a shutout of Vinny Waldhauser at 174 pounds with a 5-0 decision. The win made the deficit just one in favor of the Cavaliers at 4-3.
At 184 pounds, Virginia's Jon Fausey scored a narrow 4-2 decision over Thomas Ferguson to boost Virginia's lead to 7-3.
Zac Bennett answered for Carolina with a near major decision of Ryan Malo at 197 pounds with a 9-2 decision for the Tar Heels making the team score 7-6 before the Wahoos responded. Derek Papagianopolous registered a 12-2 major decision over Frank Abbondanza at heavyweight to make the score 11-6.
At 125 pounds No. 11 Matt Snyder claimed an 18-4 major decision against Brian Bokoski to give UVa a 15-6 lead before Matt Nelson gave the Cavaliers an 18-6 advantage with a 6-2 over Brock LiVorio at 133 pounds.
In the marquee matchup of ranked wrestlers at 141 pounds 10th-ranked Nick Nelson held off a late charge from No. 18 Evan Henderson to hold on for a 7-4 decision over Henderson to clinch the dual for Virginia at 21-6.
Gus Sako extended Virginia's lead to 24-6 with a narrow 5-3 decision over Jon Burns at 149 pounds before Corey Mock claimed the final bout of the day with a 10-2 major decision over Jedd Moore at 157 pounds to provide the final tally of 24-10 in favor of Virginia.
The Tar Heels fall to 2-10 on the year and 1-1 in ACC duals but will have a chance to bounce back on Sunday as they head to Blacksburg, Va. to take on No. 17 Virginia Tech at 2 p.m.
