
Navy Downs Carolina, 25-12

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina wrestling team jumped out to an early lead Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena but Navy battled back and won the last five bouts to claim a 25-12 dual win over the Tar Heels. Up next for the Tar Heels is a trip to Raleigh to take on rival NC State Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.
The dual started at 197 between the Tar Heels and Midshipmen and Carolina's Zac Bennett provided an early lead for UNC. Bennett needed just 1:34 to pin Paul Rands and give Carolina a 6-0 advantage after the first bout.
Dan Miller pulled four points back for Navy at heavyweight as he claimed a 9-0 major decision over Frank Abbondanza to make the team score 6-4 in favor of Carolina.
After a hard fought defeat the night before, sophomore Brian Bokoski responded with a 6-4 decision over Tyler Sackett at 125 pounds to pick up three points for the Tar Heels.
okoski led 3-2 after the opening period thanks to an escape and a take down before getting a reversal in the final period to secure the bout in his favor. Bokoski's win gave the Tar Heels a 9-4 advantage after the first three bouts.
Aaron Kalil claimed a 7-1 decision over Brock LiVorio at 133 pounds to make the score 9-7 in favor of the Tar Heels before No. 20 Evan Henderson won his second bout of the weekend with a 6-2 decision over Dustin Haislip.
Henderson jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the opening period when he rebounded from an early takedown to get an escape and a takedown of his own. Following a scoreless second period Henderson escaped in less than 15 seconds for another point before getting a late takedown for his 6-2 win.
The most tightly contested bout of the day came at 149 pounds as Jon Burns and Joe Locksmith did battle. Locksmith held a 2-1 advantage after the first period before the wrestlers garnered two points apiece in the second.
urns was able to escape with 1:38 left in the third and final period to tie things up at 4-4 but Locksmith was awarded a last second takedown as the referee signalled jut before the horn sounded. The Navy win made the score 12-10 in favor of Carolina with four bouts remaining.
Sophomore Corey Mock took a 2-0 lead after the first period when he claimed a takedown with 32 seconds left before getting a reversal less than 10 seconds into the second period to go up 4-0. Navy's Bobby Barnhisel claimed a reversal of his own in the final 30 seconds of the second period to make the deficit 4-2 going to the final two minutes of action.
Navy's Barnhisel was able to steal six points for the Midshipmen when he managed to pin Mock with 45 seconds left in the bout to boost Navy into the lead at 16-12.
The momentum swung in Navy's direction after the upset pin as Mason Bailey battled Kyle Kiss to a 3-1 decision win at 165 pounds. Oscar Huntley made the team score 22-12 for Navy with a 12-5 decision over Alex Utley at 174 pounds to secure the dual.
Thomas Ferguson took on No. 13 Luke Rebertus in the final bout of the day at 184 pounds and neither was able to score until the final period when Rebertus was able to escape with 1:32 remaining in the bout. Rebertus held off Ferguson's attempts at a takedown and added a point of riding time for a 2-0 decision win.
The win provided Navy with a 25-12 win and dropped Carolina to 2-13 on the year in dual meets.
Carolina will look to rebound Friday, Feb. 3 when it heads to Raleigh to take on NC State at 7 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack are 4-6 on the year and 0-3 in ACC action.
