Tar Heels Begin Season At Hokie Open

SALEM, VA.- The North Carolina wrestling team began its 2012-2013 season at the Hokie Open Sunday. Of the 22 Tar Heels who wrestled, seven placed in the top six of their weight classes. Freshman Joey Ward and redshirt sophomore Antonio Giorgio placed second at 133 and 197 respectively.

Redshirt junior Brian Bokoski went 2-2 in the tournament, with both wins by decision. Sophomore transfer Jake Reinemund went 0-2 in the tournament. Nathan Kraisser, a freshman who wrestled unattached went 4-2 with a pin and a major decision to finish fifth at 125.

Ward wrestled unattached and went 4-1 to finish second in his weight class. Ward had one major decision in the Hokie Open. Pat Owens, a redshirt sophomore, went 4-2 with one win by forfeit and placed fourth. Freshmen unattached wrestlers Matt Williams and Luke Mario both went 0-2.

Sophomore Evan Henderson placed third after going 5-1 with a pin, two technical falls, and a win by forfeit. A year ago, he won the Hokie Open at 141 pounds. Nick Heilmann, a redshirt sophomore went 3-2 with a pin and a major decision. Cody Ross and Joe Moon, who both wrestled as unattached freshmen, went 0-2 and 3-2 respectively.

Redshirt freshman Robert Henderson went 3-2 with one win by a pin. Chris Mears, a transfer from Virginia Tech finished 5-2 with two pins, including one in 0:21, a major decision, and a win by forfeit. Redshirt freshman Christian Barber went 3-2 in the tournament.

Freshman Ryan Harrington wrestled unattached at 157 pounds. He finished 4-2.

Redshirt freshman John Staudenmayer finished fifth and junior Corey Mock finished sixth at 165 pounds. Staudenmayer went 5-2 with a technical fall, two major decisions, and a win by forfeit. Mock, who wrestled unattached, went 4-3 with three major decisions. Freshman Scott Marmoll wrestled unattached and went 1-2 in the tournament.

Sophomore Frank Abbondanza went 3-2 with a major decision.

Sophomore Alex Utley finished with a pin and 3-2 overall for the tournament.

Giorgio went 3-1 in the tournament to place second. He had one pin and one major decision.

Redshirt freshman Jake Barnhart went 2-2 in his first tournament as a Tar Heel. Both of his wins came from decisions.
