EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Evan Henderson earned a sixth-place finish at the 50th annual Ken Craft Midlands Championships Sunday in Evanston, Ill.
After a 3-1 day on Saturday, the fifth-ranked Henderson opened Sunday with a narrow 3-2 decision over Rylan Lubeck of Wisconsin before earning a spot in the wrestleback semifinals with a 6-3 decision over Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern.
Henderson faced a familiar foe in Virginia Tech's Devin Carter for the third time this season with a spot in the third place match on the line. Carter pulled out a 7-3 decision to drop Henderson to the fifth place match.
No. 4 Mitchell Port of Edinboro knocked off Henderson for the second consecutive day to claim fifth place. Port came out on top with a 4-0 decision on Saturday before posting a 7-0 win over Henderson on Sunday to give the Tar Heel sixth place.
Freshman Nathan Kraisser fell short of reaching the wrestleback quarterfinals as he was knocked off in a 2-0 decision against Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma in Kraisser's lone match of the day.
The Tar Heels finished the two-day event with 32.5 points to finish in a tie with Iowa State for 17th place. Illinois claimed the team title with 99.5 points, two clear of second place Virginia Tech. Oklahoma, Oregon State and Central Michigan rounded out the top five finishers.
