CLERMONT, Fla.--Kelli Wheeler, Ally Blake and Logan Foulks led off the game with back-to-back-to-back solo home runs as North Carolina cruised to a 10-0 win over Chattanooga. In the second game of the day, Sara Buchholz and Lori Spingola combined in the circle to scatter four hits and surrender one run in six innings of work to lead Carolina to a 3-1 win over Ohio State. The Tar Heels improve to 4-0 on the season.
After the three consecutive home runs in the first, UNC did not score again until the top of the fourth. Kelsey Green started things off with a single up the middle and Paige Williams moved her over the second with a sacrifice bunt. Lauren Walker subbed in to pinch hit and came through with an RBI-single to left field to put UNC ahead, 4-0. Later, Foulks and freshman Jenna Kelly each hit two-RBI singles to give the Tar Heels an 8-0 lead.
Carolina manufactured another run in the fifth, with Amy Nece stealing home while Chattanooga tried to throw out Blake stealing second. Both runners were called safe, putting Carolina up 9-0. Foulks followed with her third hit and fourth RBI of the game, doubling to center field to bring Blake home.
Spingola kept the Moc hitters at bay all game, scattering four hits over five innings to secure her second shutout of the season in as many appearances. In game two, Ohio State struck first with a home run to right field off the bat of Shelby Pickett in the top of the second.
The Tar Heels quickly countered in the bottom half of the frame with some clutch hitting, recording four two-out singles, including an RBI pinch-hit single down the right field line by Constance Orr. Wheeler followed with a two-RBI single to center field, pushing UNC ahead, 3-1.
Buchholz started in the circle for Carolina, putting in two innings of work and surrendering only one run. Spingola relieved Buchholz in the third, scattering three hits over four innings and walking one.
Carolina next takes the field in the Mardi Gras Classic in Lafayette, La., against the University of Texas-El Paso Feb. 17, at 9 a.m. and Northwestern State at 7:30 p.m.
