CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coming off a 5-0 week and a three-game sweep at No. 17 Clemson, the No. 4 North Carolina baseball team will continue its five-game road trip Tuesday at UNC Greensboro before hosting Gardner-Webb Wednesday. The Tar Heels and Spartans will open the week Tuesday at 6 p.m., while the Runnin' Bulldogs will come to Chapel Hill for a 3 p.m. showdown Wednesday.
The Tar Heels claimed a home win over Davidson on Tuesday before taking to the road for the first time in 2012 where they picked up wins at Elon on Wednesday before sweeping a back-and-forth series at No. 17 Clemson over the weekend.
Carolina comes into the week with a 13-2 record on the year, including an unblemished 3-0 mark in midweek play.
The Tar Heels moved up in nearly every poll this week as they topped out at No. 4 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, NCBWA Poll, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball rankings. Baseball America also moved the Tar Heels into the top 5 ranking them fifth in the country.
Carolina owns a 15-4 advantage over the Spartans (10-5, 1-2 SoCON) since the series began in 1992 but all four losses have come at UNC Greensboro. UNCG holds a 4-3 edge over the Tar Heels at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Freshman right-hander Benton Moss will get the call on the mound for the Tar Heels after his impressive outing in a 3-0 win at Elon last Wednesday. The Spartans will counter with left-hander Dylan Hathcock who owns a 2-0 record with a 3.60 ERA in seven relief appearances this season.
Wednesday will see the Tar Heels return home to face Gardner-Webb (9-7) in the friendly confines of Boshamer Stadium. Freshman right-hander Luis Paula will get the start Wednesday as the Runnin' Bulldogs will send right-hander Andrew Barnett to the mound. Barnett comes in with a 1-2 record and a 4.50 ERA in four appearances with three starts.
Carolina is a perfect 8-0 all-time against Gardner-Webb since the series began in 2004.
