COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Benton Moss struck out a career-high 10 batters over six innings of work but was out dueled by Maryland's Brett Harman Sunday as Maryland claimed the series finale in College Park by a 1-0 margin. Chaz Frank was 3-for-4 at the plate but Carolina was unable to push across a run for the first time since May 15, 2011.
The Tar Heels dropped their first road game of the season Sunday after starting the year 7-0 away from Chapel Hill. The loss pushed Carolina's record to 16-4 on the year and 5-1 in ACC play.
Freshman Benton Moss got the start for Carolina and did not disappoint as he struck out a career-high 10 batters over six innings of work. Moss recorded timely punch outs in the second and sixth innings with the Terrapins threatening with runners in scoring position.
Carolina was unable to get anything going offensively on the day despite putting the lead off man on base in five of the nine innings. The Tar Heels stranded only seven runners on the day but were 1-for-16 in the contest with runners on base.
Senior right-hander Brett Harman was able to work his way around seven hits as he threw eight shutout innings to notch the win for the Terrapins. Reliever Korey Wacker worked a perfect ninth to register his first save.
Fellow freshman right-hander Chris McCue delivered two hitless innings of relief for the Tar Heels to keep the deficit just one run.
Chaz Frank finished the day with three hits in four at bats for the Tar Heels, while Tommy Coyle, Colin Moran, Michael Russell and Tom Zengel each contributed a hit.
Carolina will return to action Tuesday when they host Princeton at 6 p.m. in the first game of a nine-game homestand.
