The North Carolina rowing team raced Old Dominion and Delaware on Saturday, winning six of nine races in a day of competition on the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Va. The Tar Heels took on host ODU in the morning, winning only the novice eight race, but came back in the afternoon to sweep all five races against Delaware.
"Overall, it was a good day for our team," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "This week was a lesson in adaptability and flexibility. We had a lot going on - we had to give people breaks due to injuries and we had exams throughout the week during practice, so we had to learn how to be incredibly flexible with lineups and still feel prepared and be ready to go on race day.
"I'd say Saturday morning against Old Dominion we just weren't ready. That was harder and we didn't race as well as we would have liked. We had a couple hour break and regrouped a little bit then we came back and attacked Delaware and did everything we needed to do."
"So, I don't feel great about how we raced Old Dominion but we know we can race them better. I do feel good about how we handled Delaware. Our novice team did exceptionally well, beating both Old Dominion and Delaware, so that was great. Overall we felt like we learned a lot and were able to come back and get some things done. We're excited we'll get to see both Old Dominion and Delaware a couple more times this season and excited about matching up with them again."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the closest they have to a home competition, hosting Georgetown Saturday at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh.
