North Carolina will host No. 13 Ohio State Saturday in the Heels' final home meet of the season. UNC is coming off their highest score of the season last week with a 195.750, and look to continue improving.
Coach Derek Galvin is looking forward to hosting the Buckeyes. "The Carolina Gymnastics Team is eager and excited to be hosting the gymnastics team from Ohio State University," he said. "They have an exceptional team and it will provide for an exciting competition for the athletes and the spectators alike."
Two Tar Heels won EAGL Honors this week, as senior Morgan Evans was chosen Gymnast of the Week and fellow senior Zoya Johnson was picked Specialist of the Week. Evans posted a career-best 39.375 to place second in the all-around competition, scoring a 9.800 or better in every event. Johnson made her return on balance beam, after sitting out for two weeks with a back injury. She earned an impressive 9.800, tying for seventh place and tying her personal best score. Johnson also landed a beautiful vault, scoring a 9.900, also tying her career best and tying for second place overall.
After competition Saturday, the team will host a recognition ceremony for seniors Taylor Brown, Morgan Evans. Krista Jasper, Zoya Johnson, and Elizabeth Lindley. Galvin encourages fans to attend the meet and support the seniors in their last home stand of their college careers. "The five members of our senior class have worked together extremely well over the past four years in helping our program grow and succeed," Galvin says. "Their contributions to our gymnastics program and our campus community are a tremendous source of pride for our coaching staff. This year has been a wonderful journey with this group, and our entire team will be doing all they can to make this final home meet a truly memorable experience for our seniors."
The meet begins Saturday at 1:00 in Charmichael Arena. Admission is free, and parking will be available in Cobb Deck, the Raleigh Road Lot, and the School of Government Deck.
