GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Lori Spingola tossed a complete game shutout and Haleigh Dickey drove in three runs as No. 24 North Carolina cruised to a 11-0 win over UNC Greensboro in the opening game of the doubleheader Wednesday evening. The UNC offense continued to roll in game two to the tune of 15 hits and Ashley Bone tossed a four-hit shutout to lead the Tar Heels to a 10-0 victory.
GAME ONE
Carolina struck early as Dickey drove a two-RBI double to the gap in left center field, as the Tar Heels went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
The Spartans threatened in the bottom of the second frame, placing runners on second and third with two outs. Spingola mowed down Tatiana Alcala with strikeout swinging to get out of the jam.
The Tar Heels tacked on six more runs in the top of the fourth inning, beginning with a lead-off home run over the right field fence by Dickey. Freshman Lauren Walker later pinch hit for Kelsey Green and lined an RBI-single up the middle. Kelli Wheeler with another RBi-single up the middle and finally Ally Blake crushed a two-run home run to right field, giving Carolina an eight-run advantage, 8-0.
Green lined a two-RBI double to deep right center field in the top of the fifth and Amber Parrish added a RBI-double to right center field, propelling the Tar Heels to an 11-0 lead.
Spingola (21-8) scattered three hits and walked only one batter in the complete game effort. The sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., also tallied 10 strikeouts in the win and now has posted 11 shutouts in 2012.
GAME TWO
Alex Emeterio and Eileen Horsman each notched singles in the bottom of the first, but Bone induced a groundout by Katelyn Bedwell to get out of the inning.
Logan Foulks led off the top of the second with a single through the right side. Stephanie Krider came in to pinch run for Foulks and stole second base. Constance Orr fouled out and Jordan Scarboro moved Krider over on a groundout. But Krider was eventually thrown out trying to steal home plate on a passed ball.
Amber Parrish lined a pinch-hit RBI-single up the middle in the top of the third inning. Foulks later drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring another run and putting the Tar Heels ahead, 2-0.
Ellisha Elliott drove a one-out RBI-single up the middle in the top of the fourth and Wheeler followed with a RBI-single to left field, stretching the UNC advantage to 4-0.
UNC pushed two more runs across in the top of the sixth frame as Wheeler scored from second base on an error by Spartan second baseman Tatiana Alcana. Dickey later hit a RBI-single to left field, increasing the Tar Heel lead to 6-0.
Elliott doubled to right center field, plating two runs in the top of the seventh. Wheeler then blasted a home run over the center field fence as UNC went ahead 10-0.
one picked up her fourth win of the season, scattering four hits over seven innings of work, walking two batters and registering four strikeouts. The sophomore pitcher from Rocky Mount, N.C., has now won back-to-back starts for the first time in her career.
Carolina hosts NC State in a three-game set April 14-15. The Tar Heels and Wolfpack will face off in a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. and will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Saturday will feature UNC's Fourth Annual Strikeout Ovarian Cancer game and Sunday will be Ally Blake Day, celebrating the senior infielder's four-year Tar Heel career.
