Maryland Upsets #18 Tar Heels In Season Finale

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The 18th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team ended its 2012 regular season on a disappointing note Sunday afternoon as the Tar Heels were upset by 70th-ranked Maryland 5-2 at the Cole Field House Tennis Courts. It was Carolina's first loss to the Terrapins since 1990.
UNC now heads into the 2012 ACC Tournament, which begins Thursday in Cary, N.C., with a final regular season record of 12-6 overall and 9-2 in the ACC. The Terrapins head in the conference tournament with significant momentum after improving to 7-14 overall and 4-7 in the ACC.
The Terps swept all three doubles matches Sunday including a win at #1 doubles by 33rd-ranked John Collins and Maros Horny of Maryland over 30th-ranked Jose Hernandez and Joey Burkhardt of Carolina by an 8-5 count.
For the second straight match, Carolina struggled in the first set of singles play, dropping four first sets. Last Wednesday, UNC fell in all six first sets but rallied to beat fifth-ranked Duke 4-3.
John Collins at #5 singles gave the Terps a 2-0 lead before Joey Burkhardt won at #4 for the Tar Heels to pull Carolina back within 2-1. But the Terps swept the next three matches as Tommy Laine won in three sets at #6 singles over Oystein Steiro, Sergio Wyss won in straight sets over Esben Hess-Olesen at #3 and Vlad Stefan clinched the match at #2 singles with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win over Brennan Boyajian at #2 singles.
Despite the loss, Carolina finished the regular season with nine ACC wins for the fourth time in the last six years. UNC will be the #2 seed in this coming week's ACC Tournament. The Tar Heels will begin play on Friday in the ACC quarterfinals at the Cary Tennis Center.
