CHAPEL HILL- Senior Scott Houston, a native of Oak Ridge, N.C., is this week's Tar Heel Spotlight for the UNC track and field team. Houston has taken first in both meets so far this season, winning the Wake Forest Open at 16-10 3/4 and the Raleigh Relays this past weekend with a height of 16-2 3/4. Houston earned All-ACC honors during the indoor season for finishing sixth at the ACC Indoor Championships.
TarHeelBlue: How did you get into track and field?
Scott Houston: My sister ran track in middle school, and I watched one of her friends fall face first into the pole vault mats and get stuck because there was no top covering the individual mats.
THB: What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
SH: Pole vault because it is an experience most people do not get to feel.
THB: What is your top individual goal and team goal for the remainder of the outdoor season?
SH: Individual Goal: Win Acc's, break the school record, qualify for nationals and the Olympic trials. Team Goal: Place top-three at the outdoor conference record.
THB: What has been your favorite memory competing at Carolina so far?
SH: Racing up the rope doing rope climbs for training. My teammate and I finally climbed up and fell down faster than Usain Bolt's 100m world record.
THB: If you could play any other sport, what would it be and why?
SH: Probably soccer because I played soccer before I started pole vaulting, and had a dream of playing in the MLS post-collegiately.
THB: What is your favorite thing about UNC?
SH: The outdoor activities available through the University.
