The North Carolina rowing team created plenty of highlights in a morning of racing Sunday at the Occoquan Sprints in Occoquan, Va. Racing against a large and competitive field on the Occoquan Reservoir, UNC best finish of the day was in the varsity four, but other boats turned in strong performances, too, in many cases racing against teams that UNC has already seen this spring. "It's nice to see us close the gap on those that have beaten us and widen the gap on those we've beaten," UNC coach Sarah Haney said.
With 21 varsity fours racing in four heats without a final, a Carolina boat turned in the fastest finish of the day, crossing in 7:39.2. The lineup for that boat was Emma Shaw (coxswain), Sarah Priest, Caroline Campbell, Sarabeth Ritch and Nina Simonini. "We were really proud of the varsity four," Haney said. "It was a tough race from start to finish."
A second UNC varsity four finished fifth in its heat in a time of 8:46.42. The lineup for that boat was Elizabeth Ayers (coxswain), Caitlin Buttner, Moriah Glenn, Shannon O'Neil and Jessie Nerkowski.
The UNC novice eight finished second in its heat in 7:23.42 to reach the grand final, then placed third in the final in 7:21.43. Racing in that boat were Kendall Karson (coxswain), Julie Peterson, Georgia Campbell, Corinne Schreiber, Shannon Kirchmer, Karen Sherrier, Amanda Stewart, Sofia Gonzalez and Kat Summerton. "The novice eight had a great race to advance to the grand final and then had a very competitive race there," Haney said.
The second varsity eight placed second in its heat in 7:06.62, but didn't fare as well in the final, finishing fifth in 7:16.65. The lineup was Carie Mastrianni (coxswain), Sarah Giles, Erin Berg, Ali Margherio, Katie Burger, Chelsea Boorman, Kathleen Reynolds, Steph Henrich and Claire Wardius.
"The second varsity eight had a great race in heats but kind of got away from who we are in the final," Haney said. "They didn't have the race they wanted. It's the first time all season the second varsity eight hasn't had a stellar race, and it wasn't a representation of the season. I'm still very confident in what that boat can do."
The varsity eight finished fourth in its heat (6:56.25) and in the same spot in the petite final (6:54.94). "The varsity eight didn't have the best race in the heats, but in the final there was less than a second from first place to fourth," Haney said. "They had a great race and it was very positive to see us continue to gain time on the Georgetown boat that we raced last week. " The lineup was Allie Davis (coxswain), Josephine Kooijman, Morgan Koder, Jasmine Dennis, Blair Meiggs, Lindsay Newman, Emily Leidolf, Maria Santoyo and Alex McClelland.
Next up for UNC is the Knecht Cup April 14-15 in Camden, N.J.
